Signal-Return is all about preserving and teaching the craft of letterpress printing while building community through art and design. Their workshops can cover everything from notebook bookbinding to multi-color prints and linoleum carving, giving participants hands-on access to traditional printmaking techniques. Each workshop has limited seats, so be sure to check back frequently for new offerings. After completing two workshops or one private lesson, artists can rent open studio time to work on independent projects. The private, guided sessions are for those with a specific printing project in mind, ensuring that every participant leaves with both new skills and a tangible creation. These private lessons last four hours and include a design consultation and in-studio supplies. Signal-Return is an excellent hub for collaboration and craftsmanship in Detroit’s artistic community.

For over a century, Pewabic has been at the center of Detroit’s ceramic arts scene, and it continues to inspire creativity through hands-on workshops. Adults can take part in Tile Glazing classes, while the Guardian + Child workshops pair kids and their guardians to make their own clay tiles together. Marketing Director Amanda Rogers shares, “Our 1-hour Tile Glazing workshops are a great way for adults to settle in and unwind from a busy week by learning to hand glaze a tile like a Pewabic artisan. No experience is required, and each tile turns out really beautiful! We find that many workshop participants come back multiple times to create one of each of the available designs.” Pewabic also offers docent-led pottery tours and Walking Tours to explore its historic and contemporary tile installations across Downtown Detroit, making it a cultural as well as a creative destination.
